BEFORE YOU FLY
Frequently Asked Questions
Personal flight comes with questions. Here are the answers to some of the things future YiVTOL owners ask us most.
FAA PART 103
Licensing & Regulations
One of the biggest advantages of qualifying ultralight flight is how different the ownership experience can be from traditional aviation.
Do I need a pilot's license to fly the YiVTOL S-ZERO?
When configured and operated as a qualifying ultralight vehicle under FAA Part 103, an FAA pilot certificate is not required.
That means you do not need to obtain a traditional Private Pilot License or Sport Pilot Certificate simply to operate a qualifying Part 103 ultralight.
CloudRider strongly recommends proper training and aircraft familiarization before operating independently.
Is the YiVTOL S-ZERO legal to fly in the United States?
FAA Part 103 provides the federal regulatory framework for ultralight vehicles in the United States.
To operate under Part 103, the aircraft and its operation must meet the applicable FAA requirements and limitations.
CloudRider can help prospective owners understand the basic operating requirements before purchasing.
Does the aircraft have to be registered with the FAA?
Qualifying Part 103 ultralight vehicles do not require standard FAA aircraft registration or an FAA airworthiness certificate.
Do I need an FAA medical certificate?
An FAA medical certificate is not required to operate a qualifying Part 103 ultralight vehicle.
Where can I fly?
Part 103 ultralights are particularly well suited for operations in Class G uncontrolled airspace.
Operations in certain controlled airspace require prior authorization from the air traffic control facility having jurisdiction over that airspace.
Part 103 also contains restrictions regarding congested areas, certain airports, clouds, visibility, and other operating conditions.
Every owner should understand the applicable airspace and operating rules before flying.
Can I fly at night?
Part 103 generally limits ultralight operations to daylight hours.
Limited operations during civil twilight may be permitted when the vehicle meets the applicable FAA lighting requirements.
Can I carry a passenger?
No. Part 103 applies to ultralight vehicles intended for operation by a single occupant.
Is there a pilot weight limit?
Yes. The YiVTOL S-ZERO has manufacturer-specified pilot and operating weight limitations.
These are separate from the FAA's Part 103 aircraft empty-weight requirements.
Contact CloudRider to discuss current specifications and determine whether the S-ZERO is appropriate for you.
TRAINING & OWNERSHIP
Ready Means More Than Legal
You may not need a pilot's license, but CloudRider believes training matters.
If a pilot's license isn't required, why should I get training?
Because not being required to hold an FAA pilot certificate and being prepared to safely operate an aircraft are two very different things.
CloudRider believes owners should become comfortable with the aircraft, its controls, operating limitations, emergency procedures, and the airspace in which they intend to fly.
Who provides the training?
CloudRider's Brett Rayburn received hands-on training directly from a YiVTOL co-founder, who spent approximately one week working with Brett in preparation for aircraft operations and future owner training.
Brett also piloted the first YiVTOL flight in North America.
That means you're working with someone who doesn't simply sell the aircraft — he has personally flown it.
Can I experience the aircraft before purchasing?
Yes. CloudRider offers prospective buyers the opportunity to experience the YiVTOL S-ZERO in Athens, Tennessee.
During the demo experience, you'll have an opportunity to sit in the aircraft, become familiar with the cockpit, ask questions, and experience a controlled tethered flight.
The current demo deposit is $1,000 and is applied toward your YiVTOL purchase if you move forward with an order.
How do I purchase a YiVTOL S-ZERO?
Start by contacting CloudRider.
We'll answer your questions, discuss current aircraft availability and specifications, explain the ordering process, and help determine the right next step.
You may also schedule a demonstration experience before making your final purchase decision.
